Are Avocados Dangerous for Dogs?

If you turned around and you realized that you made a mistake and that your pet grabbed some of your avocados, you may be panicking. What do you need to do? Should you be rushing off to a clinic? What is going to happen?

Is It OK If My Pet Eats an Avocado?

In general, avocados are dangerous for your pet. You should consult your vet if you have any questions or concerns. Below is some information about the possible risks associated with the different parts of avocados.

What About the Avocado Pit?

There is a problem with the mix of dogs and avocados. However, it is not the skin or the meat that is going to be dangerous. It is the pit of the avocado that can cause your pet harm. You need to ensure that you are ahead of the curve though and if something happens that your pet gets the meat and does not ingest the remaining part of the pit there should not be any problems.

Once the dog has eaten an avocado, there may not be any way to get rid of the pit. That means that it may get stuck in the intestines of the puppy. If that happens, the only thing that can be done is to have surgery for the pup and that means that you may need to spring into action as soon as possible. This is the same case as if it were a rock, a ball, or anything else that would not break down for a pet.

What About the Leaves and the Skin?

One thing that you need to know about is that there is a poison that is in the avocado that is called persin. Persin is what is in the compound that causes issues in the plant. It is important to realize that there is a large amount of persin as well that might be there among many other variations of the vegetable. This is a part of all the pieces of the skin, the seeds, and the fruit. Cats and dogs are not sensitive to the poison although many other animals are.

If there is an ingestion of a lot of persin, it is important to see what happens to the stomach of the dog. You will see that means that the dog would need to eat tons of bark and peels. There are many dogs that are silly and like to eat the bark or peels. Many though are not going to eat the leaves.

What About the Avocado Pulp?

The pulp itself is something that can be toxic and that is an issue. There is a way that dogs can get pancreatitis from the pulp if they are not careful. This is an inflammation of the organ that is called the pancreas. This is in some situations fatal and it is important to make sure that you are not feeding the dogs avocado pulp.

If your dog eats the pulp of an avocado you want to keep a sharp eye on them for about 24-48 hours. That way you will know what to expect. You need to ensure that you are reporting any kind of issues as well to your vet. You are going to see that there are many benefits for your pet when he or she is eating avocados, however, there are many other issues and one of the largest ones is the fact that your pet could get pancreatitis. It is never worth putting your pet at risk for the benefits that he or she might get for the risk here. Take time to ensure that your pet is happy and healthy.
