This is one of those conditions that is also known as cardiomyopathy or DCM and it is very serious and can sometimes be fatal.

The FDA and It’s Investigation

There has been an investigation of the number of cases of DCM but there are many dogs out there that are being fed gluten-free diets. It is in these pets that there is a bad trend that is no longer letting the FDA not pay attention. For this reason, the FDA started an investigation into whether the problems that were happening with these kinds of diets might be playing a problem with the number of cases out there.

The FSA has since released many reports that are sharing all the results as well as all the findings. There are many findings out there that have been released for the pets and it is important to know which foods are going to be safe for each of the pets.

Is it dangerous to have a grain-free diet for your dog? Why is there a huge increase in the outbreak of DCM anyway? Where is it coming from and what is happening here? The investigation is ongoing and there are things you need to be aware of as a dog owner.

What is DCM or Dilated Cardiomyopathy?

DCM is a heart problem that comes when there is an enlarged heart that happens because there is a thinning of the heart muscle. That means that there are changes that happen when the heart can pump blood. This means that the problem is progressive, and it will lead to heart failure.

DCM can be an issue for both cats and dogs. DCM happens to be one of the largest causes of issues that happen in large breeds of dogs. It is one of those things that almost always ends up being a cause of death in these dogs. Dogs with these issues include the Doberman, the Great Dane, and the Irish Wolfhound.

In cats, DCM comes from a lack of taurine which is the amino acid that cannot be created by the body and must come about by being eaten. What that means is that it is very important to make sure that there is a correct level in the diet. There are many people out there that have begun adding the taurine to the diets of the cats to make sure that they are getting the right amount.

What that means is that there are many people who are looking at it and that whether there is a correct amount plays a huge role in the lives of the dog’s chances of getting DCM.

Could the Diet be the Reason for DCM in Dogs?

Within the past few years, one thing that is very clear is that there is DCM that is happening in dogs at a much more rapid rate. What that also means is that there are many reasons that there are issues that are happening with many breeds and there are many things that need to be looked at – and a lot of it has to do with genetics.

It is important to look at laboratories as well as heart doctors so that they are going to be able to investigate the cases in dogs and determine what needs to be fixed. They also need to look at all the cases that have happened in cats with the FDA.

There has been a total of 560 dogs that have been reported so far in the process and the FDA is using the cases to ensure that they have looked at all the trends and the way that they are factored into the disease. When they are looking at them, they are focusing on tests as well as other issues.

Does the Result Look at Grain-Free Diets?

The form of DCM can come in all kinds of dogs and breeds. It is important to know that there are many kinds of dogs that can have it such as retrievers. When the FDA looks at all the kinds of diets – there are many factors such as it being grain-free. When there are grains it is important to make sure that these foods are done the best way.
