Cats are like that surly friend that you love anyway. When they choose to show affection, it is as if we are being graced by the presence of royalty. The sound of their happy motors is like nothing else in this world. Although they can be fickle, their independence does have its benefits. August 8th is International Cat Day but we at 2 Paws Up Inc. think they deserve an entire week. Just how much do you know about your feline friends? We’re happy to bring you some cat trivia to celebrate this occasion.
Most Popular Pet
Aside from fish, cats are the most popular animal in American households. There are approximately 94 million cats running the lives of their people nationwide. That’s a lot of cats. The high number is likely due to their fairly low-maintenance needs.
No Sweets
Cats cannot detect sweetness. That must be how they stay so thin and agile. They are not attracted to sweet foods. Who else wishes we humans could borrow this trait?
Human Training
Cats only use their meow to talk to humans, when they are adults. Kittens will meow at their mother. It is strictly used for getting what they want from us once they are adults.
No Milk
Studies show that cats are lactose intolerant. So don’t believe those cartoon movies that show them lapping it up. What you might think is cute could result in an upset stomach.
Long Live the Cat
The oldest cat on record lived to be 38. Creme Puff of Austin, Texas earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records by living almost 4 decades. Although this cat was unusual, cats typically live around 16 years.
Smarty Cats
Cats have 300 million neurons in their cerebral cortex. That is almost double the amount dogs have at 160 million. Now we’re all going to wonder what our cats are thinking. Probably that their dog siblings are annoying.
Athletic Too
The average cat can jump 8 feet. That is nearly 6 times their body length. Maybe we need to start entering cats in agility contests and not dogs.
Spend as much time as you can spoiling your feline friends. Just make sure it is on their terms…or they will. If you need any help, please give 2 Paws Up Inc. a call. It would be our pleasure to see and love on your cats. Please continue to follow our blog for more great pet tips.
